COLLEGE STATION – A rather unusual traffic accident made a mess of traffic at University Drive and Wellborn Road in the Northgate area.

College Station Police tell News 3 a hydraulic excavator, being hauled down University on a flatbed trailer, struck both the Wellborn Road overpass, as well as the railroad bridge. The clearance at the bridge is 14’9″.

As a result of the crash, all traffic on Wellborn Road was diverted, as well as eastbound traffic on University. Rail traffic was also shut down.

At around 7:45 p.m., roadways were reopened, although a northbound lane of Wellborn Road will remain closed for a couple of days. TxDOT crews worked to remove debris from the underside of the bridge, and have been examining the structure for any damage.
